On the 100th birthday of Peter Ludwig. Collection MAT (Multiplication of transformable art)

09.07.2025 – 31.08.2025

On July 9, 2025, Peter Ludwig, the famous Koblenz art collector and founder of the Ludwig Museum Koblenz, would have turned 100 years old. With his wife Irene (née Mohnheim), he built up a renowned foundation and is the namesake of a total of thirteen museums and institutions that are firmly anchored in the museum landscape nationally and internationally.

On the occasion of the opening of the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz in September 1992, he donated a significant collection of contemporary works with a particular focus on French artists. Above all, a rarely shown ensemble of works from the Edition MAT (“Multiplication d’Art transformable”) was part of the founding collection and comprises 31 objects. Behind the cumbersome term lies an innovative and complex concept that was initially aimed at works of art that were supposed to be changeable and mobile.

The Romanian-Swiss artist Daniel Spoerri (1930-2024) had the idea for this in the 1950s. Well-known artists participated in the Edition MAT, including Marcel Duchamp, Christo, Jean Arp, Arman, Max Ernst, Roy Lichtenstein, Davide Boriani, Niki de Saint Phalle, Daniel Spoerri and Jean Tinguely.

The Edition MAT reflects in a special way Peter Ludwig’s interest in the most diverse art genres, in innovative concepts and his openness to the playful and experimental.
