Daniel Coulet. Between Heaven and Hell. Entre ciel et enfer

28.03.2010 – 09.05.2010

The sculptor and painter Daniel Coulet (born in Montpellier in 1954), who lives in Paris and Toulouse, is considered one of the emerging artists on the French art scene. The monumental sculptures he has placed in public spaces in recent years, in particular, demonstrate his mastery of sculpture: in the Mirail metro station in Toulouse, in the sculpture garden of the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Toulouse, and more.

Sculpture is undoubtedly the center of his artistic work, but he also intensively explores his themes in drawing. Here, he primarily uses Chinese ink, preferring its blackness and fluidity. Thus, he develops everything in a flow of colors, as it were, from which he evokes a scenario of biblical stories, nightmares, and visions of hell. Coulet also appears to draw on important role models such as Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), whose Porte de l’Enfer (Gates of Hell, 1885) he uses both iconographically and stylistically for his monumental gates, as well as the slender figures of Alberto Giacometti. Crucial to understanding his work, however, is not the adaptation of the other artist’s work, but rather his own language and formulation in sculpture and painting, which Coulet had long ago discovered.

A selection of recent large-format drawings and sculptures is planned, as well as the monumental sculpture Jambe de Cheval (2009), which will be on display outside the Ludwig Museum. Coulet specially designed a monumental triptych for the adjacent Basilica of St. Castor, which will be on display there for the duration of the exhibition.

The presentation at the Ludwig Museum will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in Germany. The Musée Paul-Dupuy in Toulouse has been selected as a partner for the exhibition. It is receiving significant support from Culturesfrance and the Rhineland-Palatinate Foundation for Culture.
