Jump in Art – Out of the office, into the world of art!
Theme: “Signs of the Times: Erró, Rauschenberg, and Vostell – Between Art and Politics”

The 1960s and 1970s were marked by profound political and social upheaval. The Cold War, the Vietnam War, student protests, the women’s movement, and the evolving relationship with mass media transformed the way the world was perceived—and left their mark on art. Drawing on works from our collection, we examine three artists who responded to their era in vastly different ways. Wolf Vostell—a co-founder of the Fluxus movement with ties to the Affichistes—incorporated the political and social conflicts of his time into his work; themes such as the Thalidomide scandal, the Berlin Wall, and the women’s movement became powerful visual motifs. Robert Rauschenberg engaged with questions of identity, freedom, and self-determination. His works reflect the social tensions in the United States during the 1960s and demonstrate the close interplay between personal experience and political developments. Erró, an Icelandic artist based in Paris since the 1960s, combines imagery drawn from politics, popular culture, and mass media. Through irony and exaggeration, he addresses the Western world’s anxieties and projections regarding political developments in China, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
This event invites you to view the artworks within their historical context and discover how art not only documents political events but also comments on and questions them, sparking discussion to this day. Prof. Dr. Beate Reifenscheid and Suzana Leu-Puggioni, M.A., will guide you through the evening. Culinary surprises provided by Gottschalk Catering will be served. Cost, including aperitif and *stuzzichini*: €24.
