Deep Diving. Highlights of the Ludwig Collection – “Der Kriegsgott zerfällt. Bernard Schultze against the war”, 13.05.2026

13.05.2026 , 16:00

“Deep Diving: Highlights of the Collection” presents selected works of art, techniques or themes as part of an in-depth exploration of art, explaining them through biographical, art-historical and socio-philosophical insights.

Topic: “Der Kriegsgott zerfällt. Bernhard Schultze against the war.”

The Ludwig Museum holds two works by the German Informel artist Bernard Schultze (1915–2005): ‘Drifting Continents’ (1953) and ‘The God of War Decays’ (1985). As one of the leading figures in post-war abstract painting, Schultze developed a distinctive, gestural and expressive style. His colour-rich, relief-like layered paintings have a dreamlike and ambiguous quality, brimming with narrative possibilities. Against the backdrop of an era marked by growth and conflict, his art stands for individuality, artistic freedom and personal responsibility. Themes such as growth and decay, emergence and impending collapse characterise his evocative, surreal-seeming works.
