“Deep Diving: Highlights of the Collection” presents selected artworks, techniques, or themes through an in-depth exploration of art, explaining them using biographical, art-historical, and social-philosophical information.
Theme: “The Stories Machines Tell: Jean Tinguely and Sudarshan Shetty in Dialogue”
Both Jean Tinguely and Sudarshan Shetty work with motorized sculptures, transforming objets trouvés—found and discarded everyday objects—into kinetic artworks. Rather than simply using discarded materials as a critique of society, Tinguely playfully reimagined them into absurd, noisy, colorful, and often self-destructive machines. Through the irony and humor of these seemingly purposeless constructions, he created sharp parodies of the machinery of war, industrial progress, and consumer society. By contrast, Shetty uses similar materials to create works that appear both familiar and enigmatic, addressing fundamental questions of human existence.
