Thema: “Nam Tchun Mo. When lines become space

For over thirty years, the South Korean artist Nam Tchun-Mo (born in Daegu in 1961) has been developing works that revolve around a central element: the line. Two works from the Ludwig Museum collection (“Strokes 1803”, 2018, acrylic on canvas and “Spring-Beam”, 2019, mixed media) illustrate how this line evolves from a simple painterly gesture into a spatial structure.

Nam Tchun-Mo belongs to a younger generation of South Korean artists who emerged from the Dansaekhwa movement. This art movement, characterized by minimalist and often monochrome painting, consciously distanced itself from Western art, emphasizing reduction, repetition, and meditative expressiveness. In this spirit, Nam Tchun-Mo developed his own artistic language, which consistently focuses on line. His work ranges from drawings to relief-like images and sculptural objects. He understands the line not merely as a flat element, but as something spatial and corporeal. Through repetition and variation, vibrant structures emerge that oscillate between order and movement. The tactile quality of his works is also characteristic: he works with fabrics, hardens them with polyester, and thus creates relief-like surfaces with varying heights and depths. These can be monochromatic or accentuated with color, appealing to multiple senses simultaneously. From two-dimensional forms, he increasingly develops three-dimensional objects in space. In this way, Nam Tchun-Mo combines minimalist rigor with sensual impact. His art unites tranquility and vibrancy, carrying the ideas of the Dansaekhwa movement further into a new, independent form of expression.

The lines invite the viewer to actively discover how a simple gesture can create an entire landscape in space, while their gestural quality is reminiscent of the tradition of East Asian calligraphy. Viewing thus becomes a poetic, almost meditative experience that is immediately captivating even for newcomers to contemporary art.
