„Deep Diving“ – the new series of curator-led tours, which are always offered on the first Thursday of the month, aims to focus on a selected work of art from the Ludwig Collection.
Theme: À bout de souffle. Denis Laget, poet-artist of the 1980s
“Deep Diving” presents a selected work of art from the Ludwig Koblenz collection as part of an in-depth art examination and explains the work using biographical, art historical and social philosophical information.
French artist Denis Laget, winner of the Villa Medici Prize in 1989-1990, primarily takes up classical themes that are part of a long tradition of narrative representations that range from vanitas to portraits, landscapes and still lifes. In his painting Cesser avec cette attitude héroique from 1985, Laget’s fascination with the poetics of death and the areas in between life and death is manifested – a theme to which the title of the event also refers: “À bout de souffle”/ “Out of breath”. À bout de souffle, by Jean-Luc Godard’s first feature film from 1960 and a classic of French cinema, uses asynchronous image editing in which dialogue and action often do not fit together, creating a suggestive, poetic effect. Laget uses a similar approach in his image compositions. The tour follows Laget’s footsteps, exploring his career and the subjects that characterize him.
