Exhibition: Liliane Tomasko – Bridge
30 August 2026 – 1 November 2026
Born in Zurich in 1967, the artist Liliane Tomasko undertook her artistic training at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, graduating in 1998. Since then, she has developed a multi-layered body of work that explores the cartographies of the unconscious through gestural, abstract painting. Her works reflect both inner emotional states and spatial experiences, opening up complex visual worlds that defy a single interpretation.
The works on display at the Ludwig Museum also appear, at first glance, to be entirely abstract. On closer inspection, however, they reveal interwoven relationships between image, memory and narrative. Tomasko’s practice is shaped by her long-standing interest in mythology and in the ancient concept of the weighing of the soul. She continues her intensive exploration of form, colour and shape, as well as of spaces of emotional resonance, in a new series of works on paper. In doing so, she makes increasing use of the classical pictorial form of the diptych, thereby expanding the possibilities for visual dialogue within her works.
The exhibition “Liliane Tomasko – Bridge” presents recent paintings as well as an extensive body of work on paper. For the first time, this exhibition adopts a dialogic approach, bringing together works from different creative periods and tracing the artist’s development towards a distinctive abstract visual language. Tomasko’s works are now held in the collections of, amongst others, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the IVAM – Institut Valencià d’Art Modern, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
Programme at the Ludwig Museum
7.00 pm–10.00 pm
Workshop for all ages – Balancing Colour Extremes
In our colour and experimentation workshop on the 3rd floor, visitors of all ages are invited to get creative. Inspired by Liliane Tomasko’s exhibition ‘Bridge’, participants will create multi-layered abstract compositions using vibrant watercolours, oil pastels and paper. By layering different colours and playing with the interplay of shapes, lines and contrasts, they will produce their own unique works of art. The workshop offers the chance to experiment playfully with materials whilst exploring the effects of colour, movement and balance.
7.00 pm–midnight
SUB:MERGED – Local Subculture
For Museum Night, the third floor of the Ludwig Museum is transformed into a unique space that blends elements of a living room, a meeting place and an exhibition. Under the title ‘SUB:MERGED – Local Subculture’ several artists from the region present a diverse selection of recent works. On display are works from the fields of photography, painting, crafts and installation, offering insights into the creative diversity of the local art scene. In a relaxed atmosphere, accompanied by music and drinks, a space for exchange and discovery is created.
8.00 pm and 10.00 pm
Short guided tours of the exhibition ‘Liliane Tomasko – Bridge’
The research assistants at the Ludwig Museum and the KunstKontakt team invite you to join them on concise guided tours of the special exhibition. The tours will introduce key themes and motifs in Liliane Tomasko’s work and offer insights into her artistic practice. These short guided tours offer the opportunity to get to know the exhibition in a focused way and to gain new perspectives on the works on display.
9.00 pm
Between colour and gesture
Prof. Dr Beate Reifenscheid, Director of the Ludwig Museum, will lead a tour of the exhibition and discuss Liliane Tomasko’s distinctive visual language. The focus is on questions regarding the role of colour, movement and emotion in abstract painting, as well as the diverse connections between perception, memory and artistic expression. The tour offers personal and art-historical perspectives on the artist’s work and invites visitors to view the exhibition from a broader perspective.
Throughout the evening, the Atlas Bar serves refreshing cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks and light bites.
