Thema: “Nam Tchun Mo. When lines become space”
For over thirty years, the South Korean artist Nam Tchun-Mo (born in Daegu in 1961) has been developing works that revolve around a central element: the line. Two works from the Ludwig Museum collection (“Strokes 1803”, 2018, acrylic on canvas and “Spring-Beam”, 2019, mixed media) illustrate how this line evolves from a simple painterly gesture into a spatial structure.
The lines invite the viewer to actively discover how a simple gesture can create an entire landscape in space, while their gestural quality is reminiscent of the tradition of East Asian calligraphy. Viewing thus becomes a poetic, almost meditative experience that is immediately captivating even for newcomers to contemporary art.
